CANCER…
Is a game changer. You will never leave treatment the same person.

I am a melanoma warrior who was diagnosed
with Stage IV Melanoma in November 2009.
This site is my survival guide.

Rules of Engagement

Thriving through a stage IV melanoma diagnoses was not easy in 2009.

This Journey taught me rules to help you through your cancer diagnosis

Understanding Pathology

The Pathology report is the road map for your cancer. It indicates: Stage, Type, Mutation.

Interview your Oncologist

This will be the most important person you will ever hire in your entire life. Make sure you are comfortable with your oncologist you’ll be spending a lot of time together.  A positive doctor that understand your type of cancer, with a good delivery, and willing to work with other doctors on your care team.

Keep Good Records; Asked Questions

If you do not understand what you are being told, then ask. Write everything down, request copies of your scans (CT/PET/MRI) and other test. If you bounce from one hospital to another their systems will not communicate to one another.

Understand Treatment Options

Cancer treatment options are numerous and often tailored to the individual based on type and stage of cancer, overall health and patient preferences.

Consider Clinical Trials

Clinical trials can be your best option if the result from the standard treatment of care is not great. This can be a confusing process if you do not understand your pathology and stage of cancer.  What to expect when participating on a clinical trial: Very good care, covered cost, cutting edge treatment.

Advocate for Yourself

Advocate for yourself or find someone who will be your Advocate “concierge” – This could save your life. This person will help you manage the process, review treatment options, push you through the dark days. This is a very import role in your care team. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
